Hi friend! If you’re dreaming of an intimate “just us (or tiny crew)” celebration at Tahquamenon Falls State Park in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, you’re in the right place. Why Tahquamenon Falls?
Think fiery maples, cozy temps, and that iconic “root-beer” water tone from natural tannins—plus easy access to both the dramatic Upper Falls and the serene, multi-cascade Lower Falls (now with an island bridge for dreamy portraits). Weekday sunrise = the quietest vibes and softest light.
The Quick Essentials (so nothing sneaks up on you):
- Park entry: Every vehicle needs a Michigan Recreation Passport (non-resident day passes available at the gate).
- Marriage license: MI residents apply in their home county; out-of-state couples apply in the county of the ceremony (for Tahquamenon, that’s typically Chippewa or Luce). You’ll need two witnesses age 18+ (I can help with witnesses if it’s just the two of you).
- Drones: Heavily restricted in state parks—assume no unless specifically cleared. We’ll plan epic ground-based views instead.
Do you need a permit to elope here?
Yes—two kinds, and I’ll help with both.
1) Ceremony permission (the couple)
Elopements in Michigan state parks count as a special event. Plan to submit the park’s event request 30–60 days before your date. Many couples see a fee around $50, but the final amount is set by the park. I’ll confirm the exact total with Tahquamenon when we apply.
2) Photography permission (me / any pro)
Professional photo coverage is treated as commercial use, so I file a separate permit. This is often about $50 as well, though it can vary. I’ll check the current amount with the park and handle the filing on my end.
Upper vs. Lower Falls (which is “us”?)
- Upper Falls = the iconic curtain of water, multiple overlooks, short paved walk + some stairs; dramatic backdrop for vows.
- Lower Falls = layered cascades, boardwalks, and mellow forest vibes; perfect for portraits and a slower, more private feel.
Pro tip: Sunrise or early weekday mornings give us the most privacy. We keep ceremonies off busy viewing platforms and out of trail bottlenecks so we’re good neighbors to other visitors (and stay permit-friendly).
Where to Stay (Airbnbs, Cabins & Campgrounds)
Big-group & multi-unit favorites-
- Paradise Shores Cabins (Paradise, MI): A cluster of cozy cabins overlooking Whitefish Bay—book several if you want to keep family close but not too close.
- Halfway Lake Cottages (near Newberry): Nine modern lakeside cottages; central base for exploring the U.P. and easy access to the park.
- Tahquamenon Suites Lodging (Paradise): Apartment-style suites with kitchens; great when you want multiple separate suites right in town.
Large VRBO/Airbnb homes (Hulbert, Newberry, Paradise): Use the 10+ guests filter; I’ll help sanity-check drive time, parking, and check-in for the ceremony day.
Campgrounds inside the park-
- Lower Falls Modern Campground (Hemlock & Portage loops): electric hookups, showers, playground—walkable to the Lower Falls area.
- Rivermouth (Modern & Rustic/Pines): Peaceful red-pine setting near the river mouth; quick sunrise drive to the falls.
Book early for late-September weekends—color season fills fast.
